2. The Arguments Presented by the Three Oxonians

Robert Grosseteste, Roger Bacon, and John Pecham took part in the controversy that was revived in the thirteenth century between two contrasting theories of vision, one claiming that the eye emitted rays, and the other asserting with equal conviction that the eye was a passive recipient of the rays that were the source of vision. All three savants were well acquainted with the stock of arguments furnished by the sources reviewed above, many of which they cite explicitly and others of which emerge from a comparative analysis of the texts (Raynaud 1998a; 2014). At this point it is important to examine the conclusions that each one deduced from his sources. Confronted with the same identical problem, the three Oxonians imagined very different solutions.
